Regardless of "the who-hit-Johnny" of last year's banning of the Lavalas party from the ballot, it is the largest party in the country and Haiti will have to include it in its electoral politics sooner or later. President Preval and the Provisional Electoral Council can concoct any scheme they wish to ban Lavalas again this year, but the result will be the same -- a massive boycott.

Every 4th of July I'm reminded of the early American saying, "as independent as a hog on ice." While it is true that the U.S. is now independent of King George, that dude is long dead. So what independence are Americans celebrating?
Independence from England? So why did Bush have to enlist Tony Blair to support his lies, as revealed by the Downing Street Memos, in order to invade Iraq?

On July 2, at the weekly demonstration in the Palestinian village of Nabi Saleh, Israeli army troops violently arrested Israeli activists Yonatan Shapira and Matan Cohen. I witnessed the incident that led to the arrests and filmed them as they took place.

Nearly 50 candidates and public figures have been assassinated in the run up to Mexico’s 2010 state elections. Former presidential candidate Diego Fernández de Cevallos, major leader of the ruling PAN party, was kidnapped
on May 16 and has not been heard from since.

Back in the 1970s, there was a very popular show called "Happy Days," starring Ron Howard and Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli. Five years into the series, an episode aired in which Fonzie is shown improbably water skiing and jumping a shark to show his bravery.

Five of the Seven are Acquitted - 2 Verdicts to Come
Five of the seven accused in the EDO-MBM trial in Brighton, who were accused of criminal damage for having laid waste to EDO’s factory, have been acquitted at Hove Crown Court today. Verdicts will be announced on Friday in the case of the remaining two, including Elijah Smith and Chris Osmond.

Luis Posada Carriles' right hand man, Francisco Chávez Abarca, nabbed in Venezuela
Hugo Chávez, Venezuela’s president, reported today that the Salvadoran Francisco Chávez Abarca, accused of being Luis Posada Carriles’ right hand man, and the author of various explosive attacks in Cuba, was arrested in a nighttime intelligence operation on Thursday when he tried to enter Venezuela.
