AFN Rock Gods (DJs) - Alive & Kicking Ass !

Two names to drop straight off before continuing, and you've probably never ever heard of them, but still, these guys are famous and their music lives on, even today! Ladies and Gentlemen, Rik DeLisle & Bill Kenny! Applause, applause, applause!!

Central Europe (Germany to be exact), mid to late 1970s, 1107 AM - the place to place your ears. Here's why....

Really good Rock & Roll, or to be more precise, very good Rock Music was something you either had in the form of vinyl or maybe a friend had in vinyl or you turned your radio on and tuned in to AFN. It's really no wonder that AFN had guys like Rik & Bill assigned as DJs back then. The listening audience was not the kind any standard military could keep in line or keep out of trouble without sedation. And so we sedated ourselves, from sunup to sundown. Time was the major factor as each of us had his own way of making it go by faster. Some slept all day and all night. Some set out to discover the world and some opted to get high and freak out on some of the best music to ever hit the airwaves of Europe. Either way, it worked, and these guys had a hand in it even if they try to deny it today. Oh, and to set the records straight, operation sedation by Rock & Roll was freely available to anyone with a radio, 220VAC and a little time on their hands. In other words, AFN blasted the best of the best in the ears of literally thousands ( I dare not exeggerate ) of soldiers & airmen but also those of a complete generation of (then) young Europeans. Okay, you get the picture. No? Gimme a sec and I'll grab what I can to illustrate.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,
They'll stone ya just like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,

Okay, okay, that grab backfired, totally. From 1982, it mentions AFN TV but not AFN radio. It totally misses the point as it races straight past the reailty of what AFN meant for us. NOBODY WATCHED TV ! It was all about music.

flip :

"I be Air Force Sgt. Bill Kenny"

That was the beginning of two solid hours of pure and unadulterated R O C K. Air Force Sgt. Bill Kenny didn't say much - throughout his daily two hour show, so what he did say was tattoed onto our brains.

flop :

Oops, another bad grab. Interesting, but has nothing to do with AFN. nJoy

So folks, you'll have to take my word for it as I can't find anything on this web to reflect what the air waves were like back then except ;

Frankfurt rockt! – RADIO BOB!

Rik stayed on. He's still here. And he's still rockin' the waves. I love hearing Rik's voice but I dearly miss Bill. Oh well, ya can't have it all.

Well, they'll stone ya when you're trying to be so good,
They'll stone ya just like they said they would.
They'll stone ya when you're tryin' to go home.
Then they'll stone ya when you're there all alone.
But I would not feel so all alone,

Rik these days.

And back when.....

Air Force Sgt. Rik De Lisle, sending “Old Gold Retold”, summer 1978

Bill Kenny with Dagmar Kugel (CBS) backstage in Mannheim (Ted Nugent), date unknown

"Nightside" was the name of Bill's show. It always started with....

"Hello and welcome to the evening. I be - Air Force Sergeant Bill Kenny"

and ended with.....

"Take care, be good and stay well"

This be Bill Kenny

And this is what the AFNE studio looked like ........

It makes me happy to make you happy - er

this is what music is all about. It's not enough for me to get up on stage to do my stuff while the audience stands there thinking how wonderful I am. That knife just doesn't cut the borthday cake, Joe. I need to see people smile as a result of what I do. Without that, all my efforts have been futile.

The same goes for a DJ or even a Vjay. We don't do it to show off. We do it for you.

And you.

And you.

And you too.

Am I right, Bill?

Time machine!

Thanks, rossi!

I used to listen to Alan Freed (Moon Dog) on the radio, and it had to have been before 1956 when I was locked up.

Here's the wiki page for Wolfman Jack:

a few more Wolfman treats

Anyone know/remember Chickenman?

The Best of Times

...basing this on Styx song "The Best of Times" from the album "Paradise Theater", while out looking for audio evidence of Bill's AFNE show "Nightside" I came across this aircheck featuring Wolfman Jack ;

More of Bill Kenny coming up as it comes in.

What a night!

Both Rik & Bill replied to my short messages and from what I could tell, were both tickled to see/hear someone still remembers them from way back when. It's sort of like getting in a time capsule, a stationary rocket or something like that and being catapulted back to 1979. That just happened to be the year I landed here in this island. It could be any year, depending on who you are and what the magic was like for you, then.

Funny though, if I'm not mistaken, all three of us settled down (?) and married Lokale "Maedchers".

How did THAT happen? Are we out of our minds?

And hey, did I mention? RUSH is also still alive! Yahoo!!!

Just reading this

Thanks Rossi for this info.  This is great.

Located Bill !

Had his name wrong. It's Kenny, not Kenney. Wow! Bill Kenny. I'm in heaven.

Nice work, rossi.

They had no way of knowing at the time how many lives they would change. Legends!

That's the point! They had no idea what they were doing.

I'm just one of many thousands of Airmen & GIs AND local nationals who loved to hear these guys on the air.

They couldn't have known the impact they were making at the time. I'm not sure they're aware of it even now.

Rik moved his blog to Facebook

....which is okay even though Facebook (Fressebuch) can't replace the blog.....and......

I sent Rik a short message telling him about this URL, this short story and requested we be friends. Better friends than you know what, right? Now you know why I'm a friend of the Hells Angels. I mean, which options are there anyway? You can ignore them, close the door on them, you can do most anything you please, but if you have half a brain, you don't wanna be an enemy of them.

Dear readers, I need your feeback!

If these names ring a bell with you, we wanna hear what you have to say. Drop me a line at sempre18 at gmail dot com. It's that easy. You don't have to become a FUBAR member to get your message through and if you want to, you can even stay incognito. I call it that because I can't spell the word anonymus.

Rik, dude, that goes for you too. Drop me a line or two. I'll put em up here and we'll do what we can to spread the word -worldwide-.
